Today, more than ever, employers realize they must find and keep top talent for every role. And the approach many of them are taking is to offer an array of carrots to keep employees happy and around. The problem is that carrots in the form of perks are expensive and may not accomplish their purpose. Carrots don’t distinguish between great performers, mediocre performers or poor ones. Your manager's job, of course, is to attract and keep top performers like you.

Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman et al. (Gallup, 1999) developed a measuring stick. That stick is an assessment of the strength of your workplace. Through an extensive survey, the Gallup Organization has isolated the 12 characteristics of a strong workplace as that workplace is seen through the eyes of the most successful and productive employees. If you can answer each of the following 12 questions affirmatively, you have a strong workplace, a workplace where the best want to work and stay.

Here you go!

  1. Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?
  2. Do I know what is expected of me at work?
  3. At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
  4. In the last 7 days, have I received recognition or praise for good work?
  5. Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?
  6. Is there someone at work who encourages my development?
  7. At work, do my opinions seem to count?
  8. Does the mission/purpose of my company make me feel like my work is important?
