BRF Bright ladies

The challenge

Women in Science & Technology is a movement that is gaining momentum around the globe. In the Netherlands, Girlsday is an event catered to this theme by inspiring school going girl children by exposing them to technology both from the university and industry. Although the growth is undeniable, girls in secondary education generally do not yet sufficiently opt for a technical subject cluster. There has also been little increase in the number of students going on to technical follow-up studies. The event is initiated by the VHTO in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and TechniekTalent.nu.

Across the country, more than 11,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 15 get a chance to take a good look inside 350 technical and ICT companies and universities. Through practical and creative workshops, accompanied by female role models, the students discover the versatility of a job in technology. Hopefully, they will therefore choose a technical profile more often!

The project

Bright society associates came together and created a popup ‘Science Kitchen’ workshop to educate and inspire young girls through fun and cool science experiments. During the 45 minute interactive workshop, the participants were involved in the preparation of icecream using liquid nitrogen, milk and chocolate milk. They also made a layer dense tower using liquids of different densities using sugar and food coloring agents.

The bright moment

The girls who participated had a lot of fun learning science in a new and refreshing manner. They went back home happy and curious to learn more about food and chemistry.
