Influencing Styles






Training overview

In order to be able to do what you have to do, you are often depending on others whom you are working with. It is not always easy to get what you need from them. For example, other people may be busy or have other objectives than you. That may lead to loss of time or to not getting what you need, or maybe even to unpleasant discussions.

In this training, we will explore the different styles which you can use to reach what you would like to reach. Influencing people is much more than bringing the right arguments to the table. It is about understanding what that specific situation requires. By applying the most suitable style for a particular situation, you can reach your goals without getting frustrated.


Target audience

Do you recognize the following statements?

  • I think I could achieve more in my role, if I only knew how to get my ideas across in a better way.
  • The moment I’m not successful in trying to influence someone, I do not know what I can do differently or what I can learn from it for the next time.
  • I would like to understand how to be more effective in reaching my goals in all sorts of different situations.


Learning objectives

  • Be able to apply different styles which I can use to influence others.
  • Know what style I use most and understand why it is less effective in some situations.
  • Know how to prepare myself for a Critical Influence Situation (a situation in real life which is important to you but you find difficult to influence).


Program

Evening 1: Monday September 9th 2024

Before the training, you will perform a questionnaire to find out what your current way of influencing is.

Sometimes you have to go up to a colleague because you need something from him/her. And in spite of your good arguments, the outcome of the meeting is different from what you would like. This evening we will look at what you normally do in such a situation, and what you could do differently to reach your goal with less effort.

What is my preferred style; the style which I use most?

And what are other styles? Let’s work on how to apply those to be more effective.


Evening 2: Monday September 23rd 2024

Often people think that preparing the best arguments or reasoning to influence the other will lead to reaching your goal. But if the other is not open to those arguments, the whole discussion misses the point and may even lead to misunderstanding or frustration. By preparing yourself differently, the chances that you reach your goal increases significantly.

What are the steps to take to prepare for an important and difficult situation in which you would like to use influence in the best way?

Work out a personal plan for a particular case in which you would like to maximize effectiveness.


Evening 3: Monday October 7th 2024

Now we know in theory what to do; this evening will work on preparing and practicing cases, which are currently relevant for you. In a practical and learning way!

Rutger Beekelaar and Roel Bonten will make sure that the evenings have sufficient room for theory, practice and questions, in a pleasant and safe atmosphere.
